I%26#039;d like to plant some flowering vines to climb a North facing wall. Any suggestions on shade tolerant climbers? I especially like scented flowers.
What should I plant on a North facing wall?
A North facing wall is always shaded, but as long as it is open to the sky it will get enough light to grow many things. I%26#039;ve always seen Climbing Hydrangea recommended for this type of situation. Below is a link for this, and a link for other shade-tolerant climbers.
Reply:The best type of climbing flowering scented vine is the %26quot;Star Jasmine%26quot;. There is also the %26quot;Madison Jasmine%26quot; they are basically the same.
They like shade and have a wonderful star shaped white flower that has a beautiful fragrance. It will grow around a trellis, pole, tree, or short fence. OR you can leave it alone and let it grow as a ground cover.
It is als a good container plant in cold climates. This vine will grow 18 to 20 feet with twining branches 1 to 2 feet tall
Oh by the way it is an evergreen...Sheesh, flower, fragrance, tolerates freezing temps, and stays green year round...awesome.
Ask for it at your nearby garden center.
