They produce wonderful foliage but never a sign of a flower and hence no fruit. Am I doing something wrong?
I have two self fertile kiwi vines on a south facing wall. In 10 years they%26#039;ve never produced flowers. Help?
Ten years is a long time. Usually by three you should have flowers. You don%26#039;t say what climate zone you are in, but a South wall should be OK unless they are shaded somehow. They do like the Sun. But if you are in the Southern USA they may not be getting enough Winter chill. You may need Phosphorous in the soil. Try feeding with a high P fertilizer. Something for flowers like 10-20-10 or even Superphosphate. Soil PH can also be a factor although they will do well in most soils.
Reply:Hey Lucyd,
Kiwi have separate male and female plants (with the exception of a few self-fertile cultivars). It is possible that you have the wrong plant for your growing conditions. Check the first site below to ID your variety of self fertile kiwi (‘Issai’?, ‘Blake’?, ...), then research the low temp that they can sustain, and may require.
The rest is up to having the right nutrients and healthy plants.
Reply:I am not aware of self fertile kiwis.
they do love lots of sun, usually problem growing in uk unless in a greenhouse.
suggest you check on %26#039;R H S%26#039; web site, would help in you know %26#039;name%26#039; of plant
Reply:This is most likely the plants that you have:

It may be that your kiwi needs pruning at the correct times of the year. Whatever you do, do not prune a kiwi when the sap has started flowing, the kiwi will bleed all its sap out for days and even longer than a week. If you still have frost, you may have a chance still to prune now, but if there are leaves coming already, its best to wait untill the sap has settled in late spring.
