I need ideas for flower garden boarders?

i am in the process of planting new flower gardens...FUN! but im trying to come up with something inexpensive, and pleasing to the eye that i can use as a boarder, and for a retaining wall...any ideas you may have would be great!

I need ideas for flower garden boarders?
More info.........are you planting at the base of the wall or on top? Do you want the plants to hide the wall or cascade over the top? Do you want mostly perennials, flowering shrubs, annuals, bulbs, etc? And what is your climate??

Atop walls I like prostrate rosemary, saponaria, sweet alyssum, lobelia, cascade petunias......oh my the list is long.

For a border, how deep? Will it be one row deep or deep enough for several different plants? Ideally 6 feet allows for a good three different type plants in depth; a border plant, medium and then upright in the back.

Don%26#039;t know if you are looking at a water saving design, but go to www.highcountrygardens.com and look at their predesigned gardens for ideas.
Reply:Phlox comes in different colors and it fills in real nice.
Reply:Lawn timbers, used railroad ties, large rocks......best of luck to you.
Reply:For a retaining wall, I%26#039;ve seen someone use use 2 liter Coke bottles. They took the labels off first and it was a way to recycled the product (because they%26#039;re plastic they will last forever too). He stacked them like logs so that the bottom %26quot;bumpy%26quot; part was the part that you saw. It looked cool.
