I have some peony roses in my flower bed?

They take up an area of approximately 1m x 0.5m. When in bloom they are lovely but the rest of the time I have a big bare patch along the wall where they are situated. I know they dont like to be moved and wouldnt want to as it was my gran%26#039;s garden that she left to me in her will and they were her fave flower, but I%26#039;m wondering if there%26#039;s anything I can plant in this area that will have finished flowering before the peonys come up and that will not interfere with them?

Why not put in some early colour like some early spring flowering bulbs. Bulbs like Crocus and Dwarf Iris could be planted in the area to naturalise. Also Helleborus Niger (The Christmas Rose) is rather low growing, flower with large, white flowers from December onwards and would compliment growing under the lush foliage of the peony%26#039;s and once they die back in the autumn you%26#039;ll have something to look forward to for the winter.
Reply:I%26#039;d plant around it - even in it%26#039;s space - I%26#039;m sure it%26#039;d push other plants out of the way. Maybe just be careful not to damage the roots too much.


I found one in my confier hedge! I moved in to my house in teh winter adn was very suprised when teh following summer a huge peony appeared half waya long the hedge! It happily pushes out of the hedge, and even though it looks squashed it has lovely flowers!

Reply:You could plant some spring bulbs,after the peonies have flowered you could put some wallflowers in for autumn colour and perfume.How nice you sound,not to want to dig it up as it was your grandmas favourite.
Reply:You could plant a ground cover that doesn%26#039;t die off in winter - like ivy. Mostly things die off during this time though. Why not just leave things as they are?
Reply:Peonies can be moved and as a matter of fact it is probably time to divide them. Peonies don%26#039;t mind being moved at all. I%26#039;ve moved one particular peony several times. Peonies need to be divided every few years as well to keep them healthy and it gives you another plant to enjoy. Here is a site that tells you how to transplant and how to divide peonies. Good Luck
