I really need help with choosing pictures to hang on my wall. Could someone at least try to help me, please?

My walls are being painted %26quot;cherry divine%26quot;, which is a bright, almost bold red-pink color, I am also adding a lot of white to my room to balance it out, and I am working to make my bedroom look elegant and beautiful, regal almost, and I am currently choosing pictures to frame and hang on my walls. I am planning on getting a lot of pictures printed out al Walmart.com for pickup, in a traditional photo-style, not paper printed off the pc. I am only going to choose a few frames and alternate pictures every once in a while for some change, so don%26#039;t be afraid to request a lot of things. I already have some(drool %26lt;3) photos of Gaspard Ulliel, some flower photos, and a sunset. If you can think of anything that would look nice in a frame and against the color of my walls, I would love some suggestions. (I am looking for photos that seem professional.) Also, some links if you know of any particularly nice pictures (links to deviantart, photobucket, istock, etc.) would help. Thanks very much! %26lt;3

Your color choice is one of my favorites. It%26#039;s not red or pink, exactly.

For pictures have you thaught of a:

Green forest

Waterfall

Autumn leaves with a scenery

A portrait of someone who inspires you

Mountains

Desert sand/wind

Inspiring poems by famous poets!!!!

A portrait of the kennedy%26#039;s

Sceneries in different states, countries etc.

Sedona Arizona has some beautiful scenery!

Pictures of another era, culture, with either a person or people doing something.

The oceans underneath?

Animals

Children playing

A new york skyline

The eifle tower? In paris.

Londons courtyard

Castles in scotland or otherwise

Pictures of the remains in greece

Artifacts

Zen-like photos: Fire, water, wood, metal and earth elements.

Music notes, a guitar, piano, harp, or singer.

A mystical scene; like fairies, angels, solar system, sun, planet, space etc.

How about simple pictures like a picture of a vase, tree, plate, fruit, home, a picture of every season of the year, a beautiful fabric from india, moracco etc., fashion designs of different designers like coco chanel, Versace etc. or a picture of candles lit.

Black and white photos of happy times in your life. When it comes to these kinds of photos, they look better in black and white ( with black frames).

Or you could do black and white of anything else, especially the people photos of others doing something simple in their everyday life, like waiting for the subway or having a cocktail drink etc.

Picture paintings of your favorite artists: try pablo picasso, monet, Georgia O%26#039;keefe, Van Gogh etc.

As far as, devian art (which is a great site), photobucket, istock and flicker; you would have to look because their are so many nice pictures on these sites, and it%26#039;s truly about what captures your eye not mine.

I like your idea, but definitely get alot of pictures because our moods change as we change daily. This will help you from having to repaint the wall.

Go crazy with color, and don%26#039;t be afraid to use pictures you think might not match. Mixing and matching are great ways to decorate. This is what can make a statement. It%26#039;s important to love what you frame. I couldn%26#039;t look at a picture I didn%26#039;t like on a daily basis, just because it matches the scheme I%26#039;m working on.

I%26#039;ve gone to elegant homes and have noticed artwork or pictures from everywhere, or anything that suits their whim.

I would also consider getting more frames, just in case you feel the need for more.

How about 6 to 9 frames on one wall or 4. You could put 2 on each wall also.

Get some frames in gold, silver, black and wood (maybe the antique wood look).

Frames can get expensive. If you can%26#039;t afford to buy such gold frames etc. Then spray them with a good gold/silver metallic color, a glossy or matte black. The wood color might be hard to pull off. This is what I do. If you want them glossier, get a clear gloss spray.

Place the frames on paper and just spray and let dry. It%26#039;s so easy. Or go to a goodwill or salvation store, and you just might find some good wooden frames for less than half the price! I have found frames from pottery barn in these places for $3 dollars.

You can try different sizes together or same sizes. It doesn%26#039;t have to be perfect. Go through some pages in the architectural digest magazine, and you%26#039;ll notice how some elegant homes have different sizes shapes, pictures etc.

If your looking for a theme, then that%26#039;s different. For ex: if you want a nature theme at first, then frame just those scenes. If you feel like you need a pick me up, then choose pictures of happy colorful times, places etc. Find pictures of every color in a flower: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black etc. Frame each flower and you%26#039;ve got color!

Why don%26#039;t you get some stencils in a variation of different styles, or pick your favorite and stencil either the bottom or top part of you walls, all around or maybe on the wall behind your bed. Circles within sqaures, squares with in circles, lines within lines, the half moon with sun, same colored flowers in a line. You can get stencils at a craft store.

Try going to a half price/used book store and buy some books on clearance, that have some pictures you like and get them copied. I do this. The other day I found a book for $1, called %26quot;Shakespears Flowers%26quot;. I%26#039;m going to frame some.

You could go to a hobby lobby store and add some metal cast iron objects on your wall. Some are made for outside, but they look elegant inside. I%26#039;ve baught some cast iron candle holders for the wall and a very large detailed cast iron cross.

I too am also repainting, but I%26#039;m doing one wall red in the living room and a stone brick color on the rest. In my room, I%26#039;ve always used so much color, but now I%26#039;m going all pure white with green as primary, blue on botton red on top and a lavendar line, on the wall behind my bed. Well, maybe I shouldn%26#039;t use the blue. I baught some pink satin sheets, and I%26#039;m going to use a white feather down comforter and brown comforter with pink and red pillow cases in feather down pillows. Maybe with a touch of my two yellow pillow cases with flowers on them. I basicallly, want my bed as the focal point, it%26#039;s where I sleep. The other room I use for my cloths etc.

Once you have your collections together, don%26#039;t stop collecting. Whenever your in the mood or find a nice picture in a magazine, book etc. tear it out or go get it printed. As we change, so does our environment. I can%26#039;t imagine living in a home for 10 years with the same old colors and pictures. That can be quite stale!

You could also purchase a big binder, and those plastic protector sheets, where you can insert all your photos to keep them organized and labeled. So when you want to change the mood, just go to the binder. You can do this with paint chips, fabric too, or ideas you get from magazines. I working on this now. For the larger photos, go to a craft store and see what they have to protect them.

Well I hoped my suggestions helped.

Reply:I would pick a theme -- even if you have several themes to switch from one to another from time to time -- such as Chinese watercolors, Rennaissance art or prints of paintings by artists of the same era, artistic photographs (especially black and whites -- striking with the red and white). I hope that steers you in a clearer direction.

Also... think about other art pieces you could hang on the wall, such as iron or wood sculpture, candles, mirrors, floating shelves. Just make sure everything is arranged in groupings, orderly (even if ordered in %26#039;disorder%26#039;), so it%26#039;s a calming arrangement for the bedroom (and not so cluttered-feeling). And it%26#039;s nice to vary the sizes of the frames and prints -- I especially love large matting for a smaller print.

Check this out for ideas in addition to the prints -- you may want to use a decorative mirror over a dresser or the headboard:

Even how they show the lady portrait sketches is an interesting idea. You might find something and run with it like that -- maybe it%26#039;d be more fashion oriented or from the 20s or 50s or 70s.

The bright red color sounds beautiful (I love that combo, too). Just make sure it%26#039;s balanced enough so that the palette is soothing enough for a room for R%26amp;R. Have fun!
Reply:I think tyou should have a floral picture.Pink and whitle with a gold frame.I think this will look really well balance out instead of pink and white.Add a little gold once in a while.Trust me iy will make a differance.
Reply:I think black and white photos in black frames would look beautiful against the wall color you are describing. go to art.com and browse through some of the galleries....i have decorated most of my house with prints from that site!
Reply:I think people are intimidated to answer your question because you all ready seem to know what you want. My advice would be to %26quot;keep it simple.%26quot; I have a red and white hallway and only have 2 pictures hanging. It keeps everything simple and clutter free. I love the color of my walls, so why cover it up with distracting pictures. A few tasteful, carefully placed pictures speak volumes over tons and tons of pictures all over the walls.
Reply:My advice is with that color scheme, I would take a large enough paint sample with me to the store and hold it up to the pictures you like. See if it would look good on the wall. You don%26#039;t want flowers, sunsets...ect all mixed together. Pick one theme and carry it throughout. For elegant, beautiful, regal I would visiting JcPenney%26#039;s website and looking at the following items:

** 20-30-40%26quot; Wall Shelves (available in 3 finishes)

** Pair of Chinese Watercolor Paintings

** New! Victorian Tapestry

** Wall Grille and Sconce Set

These are just some of the ideas I looked at when I read your description. All of the above items are found under Home furnishings, you can just search for the title for the specific ones mentioned. I bet you can find several things to fit your taste and budget.

good Luck.

Is it wise to do a planter wall myself?

I would like to have a small stone planting wall in my front yard around my house. Nothing large must a few inches high to retain some dirt so I can plant flowers and the like. The front of my house is stone and I%26#039;d like the stone of the wall to match. Is something like that easy enough to do it yourself, or would I be better off in the long run to pay someone to do it? And would I need weeping holes for something that small for drainage?

Is it wise to do a planter wall myself?
You can get ideas from home depot or lowes with regard to building a planter like this. If it is up against the house there are problems you will have to deal with - so I don%26#039;t recommend it. I would definitely put in not only weeping holes but drainage. Get a handyman or a contractor if you can or you are in for quite a bit of work. If you can find the same stone as your house has you could build it out of the stone and mortar. However, you probably only have a veneer of stone over wood framing. Either way I would keep the planter away from the wall to avoid moisture and the problems associated with it. If you do it wrong you could damage the house so get someone knowledgeable to look at it. If you are truly only going a few inches high you probably don%26#039;t have to do anything since there should be at least 6 inches clearance at the house. You might consider having a 4 inch or so wide layer of gravel separated and up against the house to help drainage. Another thing you could do is to dig the whole thing down about a foot and put the wall in to the height you want - then fill the dirt back no higher than it was- this should be ok. - Good luck!
Reply:If you are trying to match the stone work on your house, you may want to hire someone. Most home improvement stores offer stones that are stackable and interlock. These don%26#039;t require mortar, and are easily installed. However, it is still hard work. You need to level the ground by removing any ground cover, put sand down so that you can level it, or the wall won%26#039;t look nice. With a little time and elbow grease anyone can make a landscape wall look great. However, if you want to mortar and brick (or stone), weep holes should be used to allow excess moisture to escape quickly (so you don%26#039;t rot your plant%26#039;s roots), and pro would be worth it. It is hard work, if you have never done it before.
Reply:My husband and I do major landscaping projects on contract, so I have experience with this.

For only a few inches, you shouldn%26#039;t need to hire someone if you are willing to do some heavier type work. I%26#039;d recommend the small retaining wall blocks, sometimes called %26quot;gardener II.%26quot;

For the best stability, dig down an inch or two where you want the blocks to sit and put down a base of limestone screenings or other compactable, stable material. Then set the stones and backfill with soil.

Anything higher than 3 courses (or layers) of block and you may want to consult a professional.
Reply:oh i think its very wise to

what you need to do is go to a home depot or lowes stores like that

and see if you can find some type of stone that matches your stone that you already have. as for how much to get will change as to how bnig you are making it but you can make a good guess and you can always get more.

as to how to build its fairly simple take the stones you bought and simply lay out the stones the shape you want them and once you have that simply stack them up to your height you want

What is the longest lasting, least droopy flower you know of?

I bought these cute on the wall vases for my apartment that allow a single stem to be placed in each, and currently I have Gerber Daisies. I doubt they will last long...does anyone know the answer to this? I hate carnations...and will only resort to fake flowers when i am going out of town.

What is the longest lasting, least droopy flower you know of?
actually, i have found that gerber daisies last the longest as far as common flowers you can get at a florist or supermarket. Add a little bit of sugar to the water, or use Sprite...it helps the stems last longer. Also trim the bottom of the stems frequently to keep them fresh. I agree about fake flowers, but what about dried flowers? Dried roses can be beautiful....many others that are very cool but i don%26#039;t know the names:)

...question for you: why do you worry about having flowers in the vases when you are not even there? ...just curious :0
Reply:I don%26#039;t see why a rose wouldn%26#039;t work if the bulb was firm and closed when you bought it.

You could also try a small bunch of spray roses which look beautiful.
Reply:Zinnias seem to last forever, with a little fern very pretty.Doubles are best.
Reply:daisies of course, and baby%26#039;s breath. you can put baby%26#039;s breath in there and leave it, they dry looking the same as alive
Reply:I%26#039;ve had good luck with carnations. Recently a bunch lasted almost two weeks and they were just from the supermarket. What ever your buy, buy the freshest you can and change the water regularly.

I am trying to build a raised flower bed. The bottom base is concrete. I need ideas on how to?

build this raised flower bed so that the water will not sit at the bottom of the base. Also what should the walls be made of. Thanks for your thoughts on this idea

I am trying to build a raised flower bed. The bottom base is concrete. I need ideas on how to?
We built ours out of 4%26quot; x4%26quot; treated(treated with copper, not arsenic) wood and the excess water comes out between the wood. We used long lag screws to hold them together. We also built some out of retaining wall block which weeps excess water through the blocks quite well. With a concrete base, you could use either and the excess water would just weep out under the bottom blocks or wood.

If you do a google search for %26quot;raised bed gardening%26quot; you%26#039;ll get many sites that have information about it and places that sell kits to build them. I%26#039;ve used mine for vegetables and had a bumper crop of tomatoes, cucumbers and squash despite the drought we%26#039;re having.

I also put earth worms in my beds to help improve the soil since we had used topsoil bought from Lowes that didn%26#039;t have a lot of nutrients in it.
Reply:I don%26#039;t think I am understanding. Are you building a flowerbed on a concrete slab? If so, that is going to fry your plants.

Just like lawns fry if there are rocks beneath the surface, the concrete is going to be heated by the sun and cook your garden.
Reply:Ideally you should break up the concrete so that water can drain into the soil beneath the concrete.

Otherwise, you will need to put a layer of gravel or plastic drainage tubing on the bottom of the raised bed. Wall can be made of anything you choose: wood, stone, concrete, bricks.
Reply:You could put in French Drains, which are basically clay pipes that sit at the bottom of the bed, and lead excess water out of it.

If you are careful, and don%26#039;t over water, you can just treat your bed like a giant pot.

The walls depend on what you are trying to do, and how high you are building the bed. I like concrete blocks, personally, but it depends on your budget and tastes.
Reply:You can build the walls out of whatever you like- wood, concrete block, landscaping block. It sounds like you are building raised beds on an existing concrete slab. If so, make the beds 8-12 inches deep. Water will not sit at the base, it will drain out under whatever materials you use. If you use hollow core concrete blocks, you can fill the cores with soil and grow in them also.

Sounds like they%26#039;re from the Staffordshire region of England, where a lot of pottery manufacturers developed in the late 18th century and continue to this day. Sounds like you need to contact a ceramics expert if you want value/etc, check on the Antiques Roadshow website, maybe they have info.

Since your walls are cherry divine in color, don%26#039;t do too many photos with bright reds. I would limit them to one or two. I would go with photos that picked out my accent colors. You said you are accenting with a lot of white, but do you have a 3rd color? I always use 3 colors in my rooms to add balance. Black would be nice and easy to do. You can find lots of photos on the net of white or red flowers to frame. Just type %26quot;printable flower photos%26quot; in your browser and select which ones you like. Another idea is to take your camera with you and snap your own photos...sun sets, street scenes, etc. You can also paint your frames in white or your 3rd color accent to being the accent into the room better. Lots of ideas for you to make a beautiful room since you have chosen such a great wall color to work with. Good luck and have fun!

I went for analogous color so my decor is mostly pink and orange (pillows, curtains, flowers, etc.) and with lilac paint, but i am starting to feel that it clashes. I need some expert advise. Should i change the wall color? Problem is i don%26#039;t want white or beige or any neutral color.

Reply:lilac, definitely, is wrong.

what you could do is take a corral and lighten it to pastel shade or you could try for a sunrise effect, also pastel.
Reply:yellow, if u want to keep it summery,

lilac, brown, burnt orange or tomatoe red if u want to make it darker

If you went with blue that would be ok.
Reply:dark brown
Reply:Sunflower Yellow!

Reply:yellow, green, darker pink and darker orange, tan
Reply:The pink stuff should go well with lilac paint. I think you should lose the orange stuff.
Reply:yellow or baby blue will look awsome
Reply:I think orange clashes with lilac so i would go for another colour definitely. Pink and Orange do tend to work well together on most occasions. Your trouble is trying to get a colour to go with both. You could try a yellow either a pale or dark (NOT FLURO), the shade depending on how dark your pinks and oranges are. Some kind of shade of brown might also work IE either a tan or a chocolate brown again depending on what shade your pinks and oranges are
Reply:diffrent shade of pink or a nice red
Reply:I would definitely change the wall color. That sounds like a nightmare lol. You should go with yellow as it will complement the orange the pink . I think it would look great. I have been painting for 13 years and know about what looks good with different palletes. I wouldn%26#039;t go too bright though. A warm yellow would work the best
Reply:If you want to stick to orange and pink, get rid of the lilac. Use accent colors of green and yellow.
Reply:Hello,,lime green!!

What kind of wall art would look good in our formal living/dining room?

You don%26#039;t need to be an interior designer or anything, I just want anyone and everyone%26#039;s ideas:

My husband and I just moved into our new home and I am trying to decide what kind of of poster/print(s) I would like to hang in the formal living and dining room.

The house is two years old, with light, 12x12 natural colored Travartine tile throughout the first floor, including the formal living areas. The walls in the FLR/DR are white and the main wall in the room is a buttery yellow I kept the informal living areas kind of open and airy, and tried to keep sort of a Spanish Colonial/palm tree feel to it and I love the look. What should I do in the formal living area?

I am open to suggestions, but I am tired of the vintage advertising art thing and I am not really into the x-ray flowers that seem to be the next big thing. I don%26#039;t want anything too cloying/victorian style.

Other than that, please suggest some things to me. All ideas welcome!

What kind of wall art would look good in our formal living/dining room?
Since your home is new and has tiled floors I would say you could go fairly modern, pick what catches your eye, and keep the frames all the same colour to keep it formal. I don%26#039;t know what any of your accent colours are but I would maybe pull something out of those for the biggest picture and work from there with the smaller ones. Good hunting
Reply:imagekind.com has the most incredible prints and they are reasonably priced. you can even have the work framed cause they have a huge number of frame and mat options. just take a peek an i am sure you will find something you like.

I think %26quot;Palm Bay%26quot; would go well with decor you describe, or %26quot;Sunlit Steps.%26quot;

The Half height can be put above a wainscot of a complimentary color...

This could make a dramatic center of attention in the home...

I have a cinder block wall that I need to cover...?

Hey guys, I have a HORRIBLY ugly umm approxiamately 3 foot tall cinder block retaining wall acroos the front of my lawn. I have decided to use a vine of some kind to cover it, instead of painting it, or veneering it with some crazy crap. It would just be tacky then. BUT!, I cant decide what to cover it in...I have english ivy that grows on a fence and has been growing on the brick of my house. I thought I could just take some of that and get it to root inside an replant it. Wonder if that would work? Do you all have any suggestions for a vine type plant for cover. HERES THE DEAL THOUGH...It would have to grow down the wall, not up! The wall is the end of the yard, and then there is the lovely sidewalk. We do have some established plants such as creping phlox and burberry bushes and such, WHICH I LOVE! I dont have any problem pruning, as I am always pulling weeds, planting flowers, or lord knows with the landscaping. I need some ideas people...help me out..I am in zone 7!

I have a cinder block wall that I need to cover...?
you could try creeping fig...or use the ivy. the ivy will root if you cut some off and stick it in the ground. The rule of thumb is first year a sleeper, second year a creeper, third year a leaper - so don%26#039;t expect it to be an immediate fix.

hope this helps
Reply:you could try a honey suckle vine, they have nice drape, i.e. they would hang down over the wall.

Ivey roots really easily, if you decide to take that route, just pull out a few long runners and tuck them in the soil and they%26#039;ll grow.

The link should be a picture of the flower. It is a climbing plant that grows like a weed in south Texas. The picture of the flower on the ground was all I could get before the camera batteries died or I%26#039;d have the flower on the actual plant with the leaves to help identify it.

It also apears to really like lightbulbs that are not the kind that are made for plants because it is growing up through the walls and into the house.

it is a desert creeping purple fashion low ground cover..

What is this leaf cocooned worm doing on my wall?

I just found what I thought was a dried small grayish leaf on my wall. It wasn%26#039;t surprising because there is a bouquet of dried flowers nearby. It was about 2/3%26#039;s an inch long, 1/3 inch wide and tapered at both ends. It was a bit spotty in color. As I was looking at it, it started to crawl slowly, and then I noticed a little brown wormy thing sticking it%26#039;s head out of one end. Not a gross wet worm but more like a catepillar or centipede, withc visible segments. I scooped it up and turns out it can stick it%26#039;s head out of either end. Almost cute, yet creepy, so I threw it into the garden. What the heck is this?

What is this leaf cocooned worm doing on my wall?
It%26#039;s a cocoon that would eventually turn into a moth or butterfly, but probably a moth.

if it a boy its just metamorphing

What colors should I paint my headboard? I wanted to paint it on the wall..?

I just painted my walls...They are tan now.. My comforter is mostly brown with dark pink flowers with white in them..and it%26#039;s green on the sides..It%26#039;s one of those reversible kind.. On the other side it%26#039;s mostly tan with brown flowers on it.

I saw a few ideas on how to make a new headboard.. I liked the idea of painting it on the wall.. I%26#039;m on a budget...but if i found something else i liked...i would use it too.. So if you have any ideas..please let me know!

What colors should I paint my headboard? I wanted to paint it on the wall..?
There are a couple things you can do. If you want to paint it onto the wall then make sure you get painting tape that you can apply to the walls and then paint your headboard, then when you peel the tape off you have nice straight lines that won%26#039;t peel the paint. You can also you stencils to give you some cool designs.

You can also make your own headboard for pretty inexpensive with a piece of cork board. You can find fabric that you really like and use a staple gun to adhere it to your head board then secure it to the wall. A couple other ideas....people have used a section of picket fence, cut the size of your bed as a head board. You can also get a screen, the kind that people use in their house to help divide up one large room. It can be painted or used as is and are cheaper then regular head boards. It%26#039;s whatever you want to do. Some people use cork board and then attach pics of their friends, special sayings and poems to it, etc. It%26#039;s whatever is special and means something to you that you enjoy.
Reply:Using painters tape, what about a plaid or stripe pattern with green, dark green and pink...another thought, what about using white pickets like a picket fence?

Wall designs for a teenage girl's bedroom?

My rooms a medium shade of purple, I have a few posters and I just recently painted the phrase %26quot;live laugh love%26quot; on one of my walls and the word %26quot;dream%26quot; over my bed. But I want to do more. The paints I have are silver, purple, pink and yellow and i have little tubes of other colors. I don%26#039;t really want anymore quotes or sayings, but a cool design that%26#039;s easy to paint by myself would be nice. Plus, I also have a few old polka dotted goodie bags and I used one to cover my windowsill, which looks really cute, but I still have two bags left. Where else could I put them? So, if you could please suggest a cool, easy wall design and another item to decorate with polka dots, that would be great :)

By the way, I%26#039;m not really into flowers and butterflies, but I%26#039;m nowhere near %26quot;punk%26quot; either...so something simple but cute.

Wall designs for a teenage girl%26#039;s bedroom?
i think medium purple. silver and dark purple would be the best color combos for a teen.why dont you get some antique looking lamps from a thrift store, spray pant them silver and glue some material onto the shades you could use painters tape to paint some stripes on ur walls you could do them very. at walmart they have wall boarder stencils. you could also cover just one wall with some different stamps. there are an endless variety of stamps at Micheals craft store. Or u could get some really cheap wooden picture frames and spray paint them silver and put pictures of all ur friends, family members, pets, and places u%26#039;ve been or want to go. then hang them up on ur wall. u could do them kind of abstract and random or do a grid pattern or hang them in a straight line along the middle of ur wall

QUILTED Wall Hanging?

I went and entered a Quilting Contest. I have to make a 30 x 30 quilt, and use some of he material they supplied me with %26quot;NO instructions%26quot;. The material is one of blue background with purple and orange butterflies. one is green with small whitish flowers, one if of different colours of vines..reminds me of fireworks %26quot;it%26#039;s so hard to find something with them colours%26quot; how to make it all come together and match? Which would be a wall hanging. It%26#039;s for a lily fest, so What I really want is a scene quilt, something that I can use on my wall after. We can use any embelishments we want, so I want to use buttons, lace, ribbon embroidery, and ribbon. I%26#039;m thinking of making some flowers out of fabric and basting to the background peice, some of the petals, with some still not sewed on, so it goes over the border and looks 3d lily maybe?

Please, I need to know how to make fabric flowers, and need templates.. can%26#039;t find a thing online.. been everywhere.

Perhap colouring pages, please help

QUILTED Wall Hanging?
Go to the library, there are books with dozens of patterns for everything. I checked out a book once that had at least 50 different flower patterns and templates for applique, but I dont remember the name, it was a very thick book though. At the library you can thumb through until you find what you%26#039;re looking for. If you dont find what you%26#039;re after in the quilting section, look for books about flowers and photocopy the ones you like to use as patterns, try the childrens%26#039; section also. The library is a very handy place!! (The book may have been %26quot;1000 Quilt Blocks%26quot; by Maggie McCormick, I was on Ebay and that one looked like the one)

Updating Wall tiles?

I have outdated wall tiles in my stand alone shower and my tub surround. The tiles are a slate/marble grey that will %26quot;read%26quot; blue if I paint my walls a creamy colour. My problem is that there are some tiles with outdated pink flowers on them (i.e, placed sporadically amongst the other tiles). My idea is to update only the tiles with flowers on them with something more current but I am not sure what. I have heard of %26quot;wallies%26quot; but when I went to their website, it said you can%26#039;t put them in the shower because the direct water will cause them to come off.

Any other ideas?

Updating Wall tiles?
no to the wallies- they are wallpaper sooooooo they would come off- but there is a special paint for ceramic tile- so you could PAINT out the flowers- (this is a simple fix) YOU must get some real help- GO TO A PAINT STORE- and ask for help----Have decorating fun-
Reply:These sound like Subway tiles. You are lucky to have them, too bad they have pink flowers.

Hope Depot and Lowes both carry rectangle subway tiles. If you can find ones that fit, you can cut a small sheet of 1inch square tiles to fit the holes. Or create a small mosaic in each spot. Sounds like fun.

Remove the grout around the offending tiles and try to crack the center of each offending tile. Pry out the broken pieces and scrape all of the old mastic or thinset out of the area. It if looks solid, just follow the instructions on a new bag of thinset to set you new tiles.

for more ideas and info visit this group: http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/inde...
Reply:Look in your yellow pages for tile stores or a Home Depot. Get the measurements of the tiles you want to replace along with the quantity and if possible a picture of your shower and an idea of what you are looking for. Go to several of the stores and talk with a professional. These people know tiles and what is required for removal and installation and steer you in the right direction as well as give you a cost quote of replacing the tiles or other options such as maybe painting the tiles or applying a type of glaze. Don%26#039;t be afraid to ask questions or have them explain words or terms you don%26#039;t understand. Their job is to help you because they want your business, so if you aren%26#039;t satisfied with the way they answer your questions or treat you then find someone else so that when you go to change the tiles you are confident in doing the job.
Reply:you can cut the tiles out and put new tiles in and re grout
Reply:We had the same problem with beige tiles with the occasional one with a brown flower on

We used a tile primer and paint in the bathroom and the shower cubicle and then picked out the flower tiles (which were slightly embossed) with a chrome/silver paint.

We did this 9 years ago and are now going to replace the bathroom - apart from a few little chips where the metal pedal bin has bashed the wall, it still looks great!
Reply:Sounds like a good design question - i did find some decent instructions for how to remove the old tiles here: http://www.discountflooring.com/ceramic/...

Any ideas for filling decorative wall sconce???

I have 2 matching sconses that are on my wall.

I know that often they are filled with candles, stones, flowers, etc., but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas that may be at least a little bit different?/

I have almost no talent in this area!!!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Any ideas for filling decorative wall sconce???
I have used a combination of a candle and potpurrie together, and if possible I use a dollie, on the outside under the base od the glass globe if you have one like that. One time I took a piece of lace that had tiny holes in it, and fished a thin piece of ribbon through the holes and than put it around the glass globe, that tied a bow, than put a candle in the globe. Just have fun with it. Good Luck
Reply:Tough one. Here goes: potpourri, crystals, shells, incense, small plants. Maybe you could put in something really tall like those curly sticks you find in some flower arrangements.
Reply:some small trailing plants would look beautiful, with vines hanging out.

if you frequent the beach and have lots of shells, layer those in. smooth stones would also look nice, or marbles.

You can paint that 21 feet of siding to get a closer match to the rest of the siding. It%26#039;s only 21 feet, not the whole house......

You could take the trellis material or even vinyl trellis material and cut it and frame it to make trellis panels: something like these: http://www.homestead.com/gardenplanter/t...

or http://www.backyardcity.com/images/LCT/W... and put these against the weird wall. Then having an off under color won%26#039;t be so noticeable. Maybe an object of art....or a wall hanging or free standing fountain between the trellis panels, don%26#039;t forget decorative lighting, etc. Does your deck have a focal point? Is it outside the deck or on the deck. If outside, then decorating should turn attention towards the outside focal point......an unusual tree, flower garden, etc. If nothing outside the deck, then your weird wall could become a real show stopper.
Reply:As someone already answered, you can paint siding making sure you use the correct type of paint and you prepare the surface properly.

Or then again, you could plant some Boston Vine at the bottom of the wall you want to conceal. Boston Vine grows quicly, has beautiful huge leaves that turn the most amazing color of red in the fall. This will conceal your wall nicely.

Sounds like a nice place!
Reply:You can paint vinyl siding; just make sure you use the proper type of paint. (http://www.hometips.com/cs-protected/gui... With dark, warm colored wood trim, I would opt for a soft, cool color to paint that wall.

Try Home Depot%26#039;s web site. They have many home improvement ideas and options. homedepot.com

Wall decoration?

Hey! I need help - what do we call the things we stick on our wall (glass) permanently...there are lots of patterns and images like butterflies, flowers, etc...

Wall decoration?
are you talking about etched glass? as in a mirror that is etched... thats pretty popular. there is also something that is called glass tile... it is square and 3 inches thick...you cannot see through it just some colors.. some people built walls out of them in the fifties-to the seventies. now a days a christmas time you can see them at craft stores people wrap ribbons around them and make them faux christmas presents... but I know that they are coming back as a style for walls too.
Reply:Are you looking for decals? They come in etched glass patterns as well as colored.

1) i have a window seat so should i only do it on the wall of my window seat?

2) what shape stamp should i do(no flowers) just like basic shapess...

3)and what colors should i do the stamp?

...my colors of my room are

walls:light light light purple

Bed spread: perrywinkle

Accent colors: sort of a hot pink and white

What type of wall stamps?
How about stamping the top of the window seat using what ever shape you want in a pattern using different colors or different shapes. Try it out on a long piece of pape first until you know what colors and shapes you like. You could then do it above your door, under a shelf, or on the edge of a bookcase. Good luck!

Why does Flowers-Roses, drive a woman crazy up the wall??

In this case my wife. I was just curious about this big time. Because I heard from another wife, that she complains that her husband never gives her flowers at all, so this is why I gave flowers to my own wife. I never thought that something so small would make a big difference to a woman%26#039;s happiness. Thanks Everyone.

Why does Flowers-Roses, drive a woman crazy up the wall??
I even buy myself the flowers to tell him i like them, and he never gets me flowers. GOOD for you for caring enough for your wife to do a thing like this.

its sweet and it goes a longgggggggggg way
Reply:It%26#039;s just a token of your love. It doesn%26#039;t have to be flowers, but they are nice. Anything that shows your affection will make a woman melt. Keep doing things like that.
Reply:Flowers are just a nice gesture every now and then... I would not want them everyday but maybe once a month. It shows me that he thinks of me and appreciates me!

Not roses though... not very fond of them and besides everyone always gets roses... men think the more expensive the better which is not true... I am a daisy girl myself!!
Reply:I guess a woman just wants to know you care and flowers say %26quot;I was thinking about you today%26quot; I find it sweet. :)
Reply:I don%26#039;t know. I suppose some women are just very easily pleased. I am moderately pleased to be given flowers, but I can%26#039;t say it drives me crazy up the wall (possibly it is a cultural difference here, but in the UK when you say something drives you up the wall you mean it makes you angry). Being made really excited would take more than a bunch of flowers. There are things my husband can do for me that make me excited that do not require the spending of money, but I do not propose to go into that.
Reply:Something as simple as flowers show%26#039;s us that you care, that you are thinking about us when you%26#039;re not with us. Flowers are beautiful way to just to say %26quot;I care about you%26quot;. Let%26#039;s us know that you appreciate things that we do, even if you don%26#039;t know or notice what those things are.
Reply:I am not sure why..but I love getting flowers from my fiance...he will surprise me with them and it will make my day, especially if he gets white roses...but it just makes me feel like he cares about me and loves me...
Reply:You didn%26#039;t get the memo, did you? There%26#039;s something in the pollen that just gets to our senses...Kidding there

It%26#039;s a small gesture to say %26quot;hey, I was thinking about you today, and I really love you%26quot; That makes a woman happy.
Reply:well, we like to worshipped. giving roses or any kind of flower is a token and a sacrifice plus it%26#039;s something beautiful and we love things that add to the beauty in our lives. My ex husband, before we were married, used to get me flowers once a week, i loved them! it does make a big difference to most women, there are some that really don%26#039;t care but i always did. :)

What should I plant on a North facing wall?

I%26#039;d like to plant some flowering vines to climb a North facing wall. Any suggestions on shade tolerant climbers? I especially like scented flowers.

What should I plant on a North facing wall?
A North facing wall is always shaded, but as long as it is open to the sky it will get enough light to grow many things. I%26#039;ve always seen Climbing Hydrangea recommended for this type of situation. Below is a link for this, and a link for other shade-tolerant climbers.
Reply:The best type of climbing flowering scented vine is the %26quot;Star Jasmine%26quot;. There is also the %26quot;Madison Jasmine%26quot; they are basically the same.

They like shade and have a wonderful star shaped white flower that has a beautiful fragrance. It will grow around a trellis, pole, tree, or short fence. OR you can leave it alone and let it grow as a ground cover.

It is als a good container plant in cold climates. This vine will grow 18 to 20 feet with twining branches 1 to 2 feet tall

Oh by the way it is an evergreen...Sheesh, flower, fragrance, tolerates freezing temps, and stays green year round...awesome.

Ask for it at your nearby garden center.

HELP! My cat keeps going over the wall into my neighbour's garden.?

Next door is very proud of his garden and goes mad (rightly) when he finds cats%26#039; mess in his recently laid gravel flower beds. We%26#039;ve tried some jelly stuff from the pet shop, mothballs, spikes on the wall (The cat just takes a different route into the garden!) Throwing water when seen! Swearing and gesticulating! Nothing works! No, I can%26#039;t tell my neighbour to get a dog! There must be some way without declawing (which I will not do.), euthanasia (out of the question!) or firearms (NO!)! Any new ideas? I had to go into next door this morning with an apology, rubber gloves and a plastic bag! HELP!

HELP! My cat keeps going over the wall into my neighbour%26#039;s garden.?
you can buy a security system that you put around your garden boundary wall/ fence your cat then has to wear a collar ..this will comtain your cat to your garden only and will keep your neighbour happy.. look at web link below

http://www.freedom-fence.co.uk/
Reply:Cats will be cats, if it isnt your cat messing her garden then another one will do it. You will find that cats rarely mess their own gardens, so your neighbour is the closest best thing. She will get in one way or another. And like I said, it may not be all hers.
Reply:There is no logical way to keep a cat from wandering outside.

The only solution is to keep the cat inside.

Declawing is absolutely not a solution.
Reply:This may be out of the question for your neighbour but if he got a cat, a male not a female that would go into heat, (which would only attract more cats) it should stop cats from entering his garden since they will then see it as another cats territory.

Another idea is getting your cat neutered, this will stop his desire to stray and mark his territory.

You could also get a fence extension for your garden, this is basically an add-on to your existing fence (if you have one) that goes at the top of the fence, its a net that hangs over to your side at an angle. Hard to explain so il give you a couple of links that might explain it better:

http://www.davidhurst.btinternet.co.uk/C...

http://www.catfencein.com/index.php

http://www.catfence.com/pictures.htm
Reply:Your neighbour needs to catch your cat %26#039;in the act%26#039;, then do something to frighten it (NOT hurt it) so it associates that fright with what it is doing. Maybe banging something loudly (saucepan lids?), spraying with water etc. It must associate the fright with what it is doing rather than a particular person, so shouting and yelling from a person will not work as the cat will just work out that it is OK to do it when the person is not around. It must be a disembodied sound or act. So if spraying water don%26#039;t let the cat see where the water is coming from. This won%26#039;t be easy but would probably only need to be done a few times before it gets the message. I sympathise with both you and the neighbour. Its not nice for the neighbour to have the cat spoiling his garden. But I know how difficult it is for cat owners to stop cats from roaming. I used to have four of my own. In the meantime you need to keep cleaning up after the cat to placate your neighbour.
Reply:Theres not a lot you can do really, though im told you can get a thing you put in you gardent that deters cats, not sure where you%26#039;d get one from
Reply:if you mix vinegar with water and put it down the side of your fence that should work cats don%26#039;t like the smell of vinegar
Reply:Its a cat.

They go where they want.
Reply:Just let your neighbours know the score with your cat and they will probably put orange peel down for some reason cats hate it hope this helps you.
Reply:keep your cat inside is the best way. or leash train your cat and you can take him outside from time to time.
Reply:Give him a squirt gun with ammonia in it. If he will squirt the cat in the face a few times, it will help discourage his activities.

Also, red pepper around the base of the plants will help, but has to be re-done after every rain.

There is no sure answer other than to keep your pet locked up in the house. Cats will do as they will unless leashed or pent up.
Reply:Other than keeping your cat ind doors all the time, there is no way you an stop it. I am a keen gardener too, also have a cat. I have the odd mishap but don%26#039;t get paranoid like your neighbour. Bit of give and take.. Dnt suppose yours is the only cat in the neighbourhood.
Reply:youll never stop a cat from wandering around the area that you live in so either build a higher fence or get different neighbours..as for messing in their garden tell them animals never sh8t on there own doorstep
Reply:Just for the record, mothballs are poisonous and should NEVER be used as a deterent to cats. So is ammonia in a squirt bottle (to the pinhead who suggested that one!) I agree that an orange scented spray (non toxic) would work well. If you can find something to use you could offer it to your neighbor as a peace offering. Other than that the only option I see working is keeping your cat inside.
Reply:Your cat has establish your neighbour%26#039;s garden as part of his territory. The fact that he don%26#039;t burry it makes it clear that he wants to mark it as part of his territory. It will be very difficult to stop your cat from going there apart from keeping him inside. Scaring him with a spray bottle or anything that YOU would use will not do the job because you cat knows that this %26quot;scary%26quot; thing is activated only when you%26#039;re around. When you%26#039;re not, it is safe to go.

By the way, indoor cat live much longer and NO they do not suffer or are not unhappy about it. People thinking this are just putting human feeling to a cat. Sure the first two weeks he will cry to go outside but if you keep him inside, he will loose his idea to go and mark his territory and will establish his new territory inside the house. 21 days later he wont%26#039; ask you again to go outside

Otherwise, the only other possibility would be to go buy a motion detector horn bottle at a pet shop. It%26#039;s basicly an compressed air horn that sounds whenever a mouvement is detected in its line of sight. You would have to put one at each end of the garden but I never used them outside. The wind would probably trigger it but I really don%26#039;t have anything else for you.
Reply:We have the same problem with our next door neighbours who are not nearly as nice as you seem. You can buy a cat repeller which transmits a high pitched noise that humans cant hear but cats dislike. Works a treat and causes the animal no harm. These cost around £25 pounds. You could maybe buy your neighbour one of these as a peace offering. He could place it in a bush or plant or something and wouldnt even notice it was there.
Reply:Well as other ideas leash, keep inside, and agree with others your kitty might not be the only one! Cats aren%26#039;t like dogs and do as they please (most all the time, LOL:) I would say to let her out only when he%26#039;s out gardening or he%26#039;s watering this will deter. But really I think you%26#039;re just gonna end up cleaning the garden alot.
Reply:The only thing I can think of is to keep a litter tray indoors and train your cat to go in that. After a while when he/she is used to going in it you could try placing it outside your back door. Good luck!
Reply:cats dont like eucalyptus,so squirted a load on my fence it works as long as it doesn%26#039;t rain, expensive though!

At a Lancome store, there is a wall covered with rosebuds. Any idea how I could recreate this effect at home?

I would like to recreate a design I saw in a store at a local mall. At a Lancome store there is a wall covered with pink rosebuds, like a wallpaper made of roses. I would like to cover a small wall in my bathroom in a similar fashion. Maybe with silk roses? Any idea of how I can recreate this? Where to purchase the flowers and how to apply to the wall so that they don%26#039;t fall off? Any creative ideas welcome!

At a Lancome store, there is a wall covered with rosebuds. Any idea how I could recreate this effect at home?
I would reccomend using silk flowers from any craft store. Start buying now and use those cupons because those flowers are not cheap. (I used to work at a Michaels, I know)Then depending on the room you are doing this in use either hot glue or E-600. Either one is fine but the E-6000 is made to hold pretty much anything to anything and doesn%26#039;t require a cord or heat to use. Just be sure to wear a mask and open some windows when using it.

As was stated before, this will be a major repair to take down so be sure you love it before you do it. Good Luck!
Reply:well you could take a pix of a bunch of roses and take that to a photocopy store and have them print off a bunch on thick paper then paste them like wallpaper instead of hotglueing bizilions of roses to your walls.
Reply:I think one of the first episodes I ever watched of a program called trading spaces was one in which the designer had huge trashbags full of silk flowers which they proceeded to hot glue to the wall until the entire thing was covered. I think this is the same thing you were asking about. Just remember when you try to remove these from the wall later, you are going to pull off the paint, paper down to the actual sheetrock and this is going to create a major repair job.

I have some peony roses in my flower bed?

They take up an area of approximately 1m x 0.5m. When in bloom they are lovely but the rest of the time I have a big bare patch along the wall where they are situated. I know they dont like to be moved and wouldnt want to as it was my gran%26#039;s garden that she left to me in her will and they were her fave flower, but I%26#039;m wondering if there%26#039;s anything I can plant in this area that will have finished flowering before the peonys come up and that will not interfere with them?

I have some peony roses in my flower bed?
Why not put in some early colour like some early spring flowering bulbs. Bulbs like Crocus and Dwarf Iris could be planted in the area to naturalise. Also Helleborus Niger (The Christmas Rose) is rather low growing, flower with large, white flowers from December onwards and would compliment growing under the lush foliage of the peony%26#039;s and once they die back in the autumn you%26#039;ll have something to look forward to for the winter.
Reply:I%26#039;d plant around it - even in it%26#039;s space - I%26#039;m sure it%26#039;d push other plants out of the way. Maybe just be careful not to damage the roots too much.

I found one in my confier hedge! I moved in to my house in teh winter adn was very suprised when teh following summer a huge peony appeared half waya long the hedge! It happily pushes out of the hedge, and even though it looks squashed it has lovely flowers!
Reply:cut the dead flowers off after and enjoy the green it%26#039;s like a nice bush maybe plant some low annuals in from if u want color
Reply:You could plant some spring bulbs, after the peonies have flowered you could put some wallflowers in for autumn colour and perfume. How nice you sound, not to want to dig it up as it was your grandmas favourite.
Reply:You could plant a ground cover that doesn%26#039;t die off in winter - like ivy. Mostly things die off during this time though. Why not just leave things as they are?
Reply:Peonies can be moved and as a matter of fact it is probably time to divide them. Peonies don%26#039;t mind being moved at all. I%26#039;ve moved one particular peony several times. Peonies need to be divided every few years as well to keep them healthy and it gives you another plant to enjoy. Here is a site that tells you how to transplant and how to divide peonies. Good Luck

I need ideas for flower garden boarders?

i am in the process of planting new flower gardens...FUN! but im trying to come up with something inexpensive, and pleasing to the eye that i can use as a boarder, and for a retaining wall...any ideas you may have would be great!

I need ideas for flower garden boarders?
More info.........are you planting at the base of the wall or on top? Do you want the plants to hide the wall or cascade over the top? Do you want mostly perennials, flowering shrubs, annuals, bulbs, etc? And what is your climate??

Atop walls I like prostrate rosemary, saponaria, sweet alyssum, lobelia, cascade petunias......oh my the list is long.

For a border, how deep? Will it be one row deep or deep enough for several different plants? Ideally 6 feet allows for a good three different type plants in depth; a border plant, medium and then upright in the back.

Don%26#039;t know if you are looking at a water saving design, but go to www.highcountrygardens.com and look at their predesigned gardens for ideas.
Reply:Phlox comes in different colors and it fills in real nice.
Reply:Lawn timbers, used railroad ties, large rocks......best of luck to you.
Reply:For a retaining wall, I%26#039;ve seen someone use use 2 liter Coke bottles. They took the labels off first and it was a way to recycled the product (because they%26#039;re plastic they will last forever too). He stacked them like logs so that the bottom %26quot;bumpy%26quot; part was the part that you saw. It looked cool.

Raised flower bed?

I haven%26#039;t a sufficient amount of soil or dirt before it hits concrete so I wanted to do a raised flower bed. I have no clue what I%26#039;m doing. Do I need to lay out rocks along the bottom, or is it fine to put the soil on the ground? Any suggestions for a retaining wall? Materials? Any input would be alot of help %26amp; appreciated.

Raised flower bed?
If I am reading your question correctly, you have some soil on top of old concrete. You would be fine to place the new soil on top of the existing dirt. I would till it or at the least, remove any sod before you add the soil. As far as material, I used landscape concrete retaining wall blocks to build mine. Should you ever decide to use your planting bed for some vegetables, there would be no issues with any chemical leaching from the treated timbers. The block also give you a nice ledge to sit on while tilling your soil.

E-mail me if you would be interested in some photos.
Reply:As long as there is a few inches of dirt under the bed I don%26#039;t think you will have a drainage problem. I made a flower box out of 2x12s. On the inside I stapled black plastic sheeting. I left the plastic a couple of inches longer so it blocked the cracks where the box meets the ground. I didn%26#039;t use rocks or anything else because boxes dry out really fast. As for the retaining wall, dry stacked rock looks good but may not work well if it is a tall wall. For a tall wall, railroad ties and re-bar would probably be your best bet.
Reply:Yes you will need a small drainage system and

felt or landscape fabric for backing this not only

works as a weed barrier, but it will also keep the

soil from pushing through your wall.

I see these guys are suggesting wood, but wood

rots and it will only keep a solid form for a couple of

years, why waste money on something that will not last?

Boulders or large cobblestone will look excellent next to

almost any house exterior, plus they look natural and they

last unlike the wood or even the poured concrete blocks

you can buy at home depots (those are made w/ a low

mix of concrete and don%26#039;t usually last past 4 yrs).

Don%26#039;t forget to bury about 4 - 6%26quot; of whatever you use to

have a solid footing and if you do use boulders it will make

it look more natural with a part of the rock in the ground.
Reply:Use prressure treated wood to create the sides of the bed. Since you have concrete below I would go at least 12-16 inches high on that. Plus I would put a light layer of pea gravel down before the soil. Now with that in mind-try not planting anything that is going to need really deep root systems. This way with the wood sides, if you change your mind later and don%26#039;t want the beds-you can easily knowck out he sides. You know you can also use really large plastic tubs. Those with the rope handles work well, and I have seen K-mart put them on sale for $5. Good luck.
Reply:A drainage system such as gravel would do fine, if your going to use railway sleepers to form your walls drill holes on one side at the bottom, if your going to use bricks leave little gaps on the bottom course to allow drainage.

I find that railway sleepers are the best materials to use as you can cut and trim them up to fit, you will need to support them with steel rods to strengthen the structure.

Dont forget to line the inside with a waterproof membrane to stop the wood rotting or the bricks getting damp.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

The Flower

Poem lyrics of The Flower by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

Once in a golden hour

I cast to earth a seed.

Up there came a flower,

The people said, a weed.

To and fro they went

Thro%26#039; my garden bower,

And muttering discontent

Cursed me and my flower.

Then it grew so tall

It wore a crown of light,

But thieves from o%26#039;er the wall

Stole the seed by night.

Sow%26#039;d it far and wide

By every town and tower,

Till all the people cried,

Read my little fable:

He that runs may read.

Most can raise the flowers now,

For all have got the seed.

And some are pretty enough,

And some are poor indeed;

And now again the people

Call it but a weed.

hmm well if you look at this and go no deeper then the words on the paper its about someone planting a seed and it growning... then people putting it down, then admiring it and then once again putting it down. But well actually im not sure how deep this poem goes.

The one about the old man was really good though... Yes at the end %26quot;He was ready to wade on in%26quot; means he was ready to accept death
Reply:The Tennyson poem is rather uninteresting and unenlightening if you take it at face value. But Tennyson was a major poet and I wonder if there isn%26#039;t something more here than the little story of a flower%26#039;s rise to popularity and then its decline again to weed status. What occurs to me is that maybe he is talking by analogy about his style of writing poetry. At first it wasn%26#039;t appreciated - considered a weed in the garden of poetry. But then others started imitating it - stealing it to his way of thinking - and suddenly it became widely popular. Then it became too widely imitated and people got tired of it and again didn%26#039;t care for it. This is all a guess on my part and could well be very wrong. To me it is not one of his better poems by any means. When you think of something like %26quot;Crossing the Bar%26quot; it seems pretty mundane and unimaginative.

The second poem there is no doubt about. It is a profound subject treated with great reality and feeling. It is not done by as accomplished a user of language as the first one, but the subject and the sincerity of it more than make up for it in my opinion. It has an immediacy that puts you right there feeling the old man%26#039;s pulse and realizing he will soon be gone, and that he is ready to accept it.

Flower girl present?

what would be a good present for an 8 year old flower girl?

i was looking at something like these?

http://www.personalizationmall.com/Produ... (the rug or wall sign)

any advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks =)

Flower girl present?
If I were having a flower girl, I would get her a gift certificate to build-a-bear. Eight year olds still like stuffed animals and since you%26#039;re building the wedding of her dreams let her build the stuffed animal of her dreams. You could even pre-purchase a little wedding dress for the finished product to wear.
Reply:both good ideas, maybe a silver locket or necklace with her initial on it, that way she can wear her keepsake? I did that with my flower girl and she still wears it to this day and that was over 6 years ago and she is now 13.
Reply:i got my flower girl a little peuter jewellry box with her name and the date of our wedding engraved on the top.
Reply:Keep it simple - how about a pretty locket?
Reply:I think it depends on your relationship to the flowergirl. When I get married, the flower girl is going to be his 7 year old half-sister, and so I would like to get her something with a sister theme (maybe get us matching pendants/bracelets, etc.), especially since she is an only child in her household, so gaining a sister will be a big deal for her.

I think if you know her pretty well, something that makes her feel really special to you is a nice way to commemorate the day, and if you aren%26#039;t really familiar with her, jewlery she can wear on the day of the wedding is a good idea, because it also helps cover a part of her wardrobe (which I%26#039;m sure her parents will appreciate!).

Best wishes and congrats!!
Reply:I love the star idea - that%26#039;s adorable. How about some cute earrings or inexpensive jewelry for her to wear at the wedding?
Reply:i bought mine a picture frame so she could have what ever picture she wanted from the wedding as well as a bracelet
Reply:I%26#039;m sure that she would love anything that you got her. My flower girl is 8 as well and I got her present back at Christmas when everything was on sale. I got her the Brats Dolls dressed up as a Bride and Groom. Her mom said that she would love it and it%26#039;s probably the cheapest present I%26#039;ll get to buy. Just keep in mind that she%26#039;s 8 when you pick out her present. Good Luck!
Reply:Im getting mine ages 7 and 10 gold Id bracelets.

Well actually my mom bought them but they are from me.
Reply:Hi. Congratulations on your marriage.

When I was married, I gave my flower girl a cute little, inexpensive bracelet and earing set that she was able to wear for the wedding. You may want to try something that she can use for more than just the wedding. That is why I went with the bracelet and earrings. She wears them everywhere. It doesn%26#039;t have to be flashy or expensive. But something that she can wear to dress up or to wear with jeans and a tee shirt. I think you could even go with a cute necklace. Also, while at a gift shop one day, I ran across a snowglobe that played the song %26quot;The Rose%26quot;, which on the inside of the globe had a little %26quot;precious moments%26quot; flower girl holding a basket of petals. It was the cutest thing. You can even have her name etched on the bottom. Things like this can be found at gift shops, eBay and different shops on the internet. Good luck. I%26#039;m sure whatever you pick for her will be great. I%26#039;m sure she%26#039;ll love it.
Reply:Since my wedding is so close to Easter, I made baskets for the younger members of my wedding party. I filled the baskets with suckers, a diary, play make-up, and a pretty compact mirror. The girls in my wedding aren%26#039;t flower girls, but are more like greeters. They are ten and eleven so I wanted to give them gifts that make them feel a little more grown-up.

What can I mix in the soil of my flower box to deter my kittens from using it as a potty?

I have an 12 foot flower box outside of my bedroom windows (it runs across the front wall of my house), I also have 2 6-month old kittens who insist on using it as a litter box. Now the front of my house smells incredibly bad whenever you get near the front door. I have plastic flowers inbedded in the box so theres no living organisms in danger of losing life, but I don%26#039;t want any harm to come to the kittens. I thought mixing coffee grounds might deter them and help with the smell, but if theres something else as harmless to use I%26#039;m open to the idea.

What can I mix in the soil of my flower box to deter my kittens from using it as a potty?
You could try adding a few drops of menthol or oil of eucalyptus as cats really dislike the smell. Alternatively, put something like small rocks or pine cones over the soil so that they can%26#039;t get dig in it.
Reply:You can cover the soil with pinecones or a thick layer of sharp white rocks.
Reply:I%26#039;ve heard cats hate the smell of oranges, so you could put some orange skins in there, and they also hate anything really strong smelling like eucalyptus or menthol. Just don%26#039;t use ammonia! It smells like cat pee to them and they will want to mark it with their own pee.
Reply:I have used black pepper in my flower boxes. It burns their noses and makes them sneeze. Cats smell before they dig.
Reply:I would suggest covering the soil with river rocks, they are inexpensive and look nice. The cats wont want to scratch in there with the rocks on top.
Reply:Don%26#039;t mix the litter with the soil as that will just reinforce that behaviour. Cover the open areas with rocks or a screen to keep them out of it.
Reply:Start with a fresh flower box. The old one will have the odors of the cats%26#039; waste products embedded in it.

Once you set up your new flower box, crush some clay pots and put the sharp edges of the clay bits on top of the soil (you crush the clay pots by placing them on newspaper, wrapping the newspaper around the pots, and smashing them with a hammer). That should deter the kitties from getting into the flower box. Don%26#039;t bury the crushed clay bits - just place them on top of the soil.

Good luck!
Reply:put a few mothballs in there, they don%26#039;t like the smell.

Flower bed around pine trees?

Due to server soil loss in my back yard while always damp due to the run off of rain, I decided to build a flower bed around several trees with landscaping wood (Home Depot). Since built with no dirt added yet it has done it%26#039;s job to help out on the run off, but I was wondering if this will have any effect on the trees (Pine) once I do add soild/sand and so on. I seen no roots showing or damaged any during the process. In the front the measurement is about 20 inches high and on the back wall is about 27 inches due to the slopping that I have. Will this kill the trees, or do I need to build another barrier around the tree itself in order to not damage the trees or lower the wall as we have dogs!!!!!! My other concernis later on in the years will I have them end up on our house due to damage to the roots or trunk. Can anyone help me out here?? Thanks Kelly Just US Army retired and tons of things on the Honey Do list to do. Please e-mail me at stitzelk40@yahoo.com

Flower bed around pine trees?
Actually, at the depth you have the retaining bed (20 - 27 inches, is that right?) CAN harm the roots of the pine tree if you fill it up. Although you can%26#039;t see them, the main root system is only around 18 inches deep. The spread is usually as large as the dripline, however, there are roots that travel farther out. If you put more than like 4 inches of soil on top of the tree roots, you can smother the roots, causing the death of the tree. It won%26#039;t happen all at once, but it will happen. Trees are very prone to root compaction. If the roots are covered over, they can%26#039;t transpire oxygen the way they are supposed to.

I have 2 very large pine trees on my property, and I am now looking at having to have them removed because I think they are dying. One is only 10 feet from the corner of the house and the other is 15 feet. The prevailing wind comes from that direction. If one of them decides to go, it will be on the house.

Edit: With the extra info you have given, you may have a bigger issue here. If the slope is in danger of washing down, you may need to have a professional come in and assess the situation, like a Landscape Architect, or a Landscape Engineer. The slope may have to be terraced or somehow supported, more than just worrying about the topsoil runoff. In a flood, if it is that close to the house, the whole house may be in danger if the hillside becomes saturated. Without seeing what you are talking about, it is hard to judge. At the very least, you will want to plant vegetation to help control the erosion on the WHOLE hillside, not just around the tree. But, it would probably be in your best interest to have a professional look at it. Yes, it costs money, but how much more will it cost if the tree falls on the house, or the hillside falls away from the house?
Reply:You shouldn%26#039;t have to worry about the trees dying. Pine trees are pretty hardy. Just make sure you have enough drainage so water does not pond in the flower bed.
Reply:Doing anything to retain soil at the bases of tree, which is lost to run-off, is good, but I understand that flower beds are tough to grow in such deep shade as pines produce.

Have you considered using mulch (held in place by the landscaping you%26#039;ve already done) or a low-light ground cover plant (many ivies, periwinkle/vinca, etc.) rather than flowers? I%26#039;d hate to see you go to the trouble and expense for flowers that might not thrive.

Pines are notorious for coming down in high winds. They uproot far more easily than many trees, and their soft wood breaks, too. I%26#039;ve read many times that if you%26#039;re putting in pines, plant them the number of feet from the house, plus ten more, than the tree%26#039;s expected adult height. That way, if it does come down, it won%26#039;t hit the building.

If you%26#039;ve already got the pines, you can top them (have the tops removed by tree surgeons) to make them a safe height, add stakes and wires every 10 feet or so of the tree%26#039;s height, or take your chances--and keep your insurance up to date.
